Pentagon DU Greenwing Wood Duck Boxes at Mason Neck
You are cordially invited to help prepare wood duck nesting boxes for the 2021 spring hatch. On Saturday, 27 February, the Pentagon Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will host our 16th Annual Greenwing Day at Mason Neck State Park and National Wildlife Refuge. We will begin the day at 9:00 AM. “Greenwings” are Ducks Unlimited’s youngest members ranging up to 17 years old, but we readily invite adults to help, too. This is a great opportunity to work towards “community service points” while enjoying a day outdoors doing something that is out of the ordinary.
Throughout the years our Greenwings built and continue to maintain almost 30 wood duck nesting boxes on lands owned by the Mason Neck State Park, the National Wildlife Refuge, and the Bureau of Land Management between Woodbridge and Fort Belvoir. We invite you to join us as we prepare nesting boxes for this year’s nesting season. We will replace bedding, perform minor maintenance, and get a count on how many boxes were used last year. You can expect to see ducks, geese, eagles, and maybe some deer.
When: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM on Saturday, 27 February 2021
Where: Mason Neck State Park, Lorton VA
Cost: $15.00 pays for a DU Greewing Membership & magazine subscription.
Bring: A bag lunch, dry clothes and a bag for your wet clothes. Feel free to bring your duck calls, binoculars and a camera. (Bring at least one adult, too)
