Greenwing Legacy Project at Mattaponi Wildlife Management Area
Details
MATTAPONI WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA
Ducks Unlimited partnered with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to implement enhancements on 85 acres of managed wetlands in Caroline County, Virginia. Mattaponi WMA is a 2,543-acre parcel of public land located in the northwest corner of the Upper Coastal Plain at the confluence of the Mattaponi and South Rivers. As a contiguous tract of land with atypical topography for the area, Mattaponi WMA serves as a unique and diverse corridor for migratory waterfowl and other wildlife. Funded by NAWCA funds, the project included the installation of water control structures, removing beaver dams, enhancement canals, and reinforcing dikes. These improvements will improve wetland management and provide high-quality habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl.
