Pentagon DU - Huntley Meadows Park Stream Clean Up & Dogue Creek Wood Duck Box Deployment
Pentagon Chapter GreenWings help clean and pick up trash on Dogue Creek running through the west end of Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, VA in addition to maintaining 6 wood duck boxes installed in 2021 & 2022 and support an Eagle Scout project to add 8 new wood duck boxes on Dogue Creek this Spring. The event will start at the Hayfield Farm Swim Club parking lot at the end of Hayfield Road at 9:00 AM (coffee and donuts will be available at 8:30 AM). The Pentagon Chapter has partnered with Huntley Meadows for better than 12 years and supported their duck nesting program by providing 44 predator guards over the years for the park’s soon to be 36 wood duck boxes (currently 22 boxes managed by the park + 6 managed by PNT Chapter) and 8 existing mallard nesting cones. Our GreenWings will be removing trash and debris from runoff in the park and creek. This is a fun event to bring the whole family to and everyone will be home by lunchtime but please remember to bring boots and a change of clothes because things can get a bit wet & muddy. We would like to acknowledge & welcome two new partners this year: Eagle Scout Troop 1865G and project manager, Julia Haworth, who will be installing the 8 new boxes and the Hayfield HS Environmental Club who will be helping to clean up the creek this year and maintain the 8 new wood duck boxes starting in 2024. In addition, we continue our partnership and send a special thank you to Wetland Studies & Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) that sponsor both our Mason Neck and our Huntley Meadows events this year and pick up all GreenWing ticket costs, coffee & donuts, & swag bags. Please note this is the second qualifying event for GreenWing youth attendees to be eligible to win a youth model shotgun at our September banquet on September 16, 2023. Only GreenWings that attend either the Mason Neck or Huntley Meadows event get a ticket and attend our banquet can win. See you in September!The event is FREE and all youth participants (Ages 17 and under) must be registered online. The Parent or Guardian can register online and enter the Youth as their Guest. Please complete one (1) online registration for each Youth participant. Online registration will be first come first serve.
